“The Role of Community Support in Achieving Food Sovereignty” - Online Discussion on Food Sovereignty in the Arab World

Within our endeavor as Dalia Association,  to present the issue of food sovereignty as a principle and practice in Palestine, and to gather the efforts of the actors in the field to come up with a clear collective approach towards food sovereignty in Palestine, we partnered with the Heinrich Böll Foundation - Palestine and Jordan, to conduct a series of mujawarat, discussions, and dialogues on the subject of national food sovereignty. With the purpose of conducting a study and formulating a position paper on the subject, in addition to another study on the reality of farmers in the border areas of the Gaza Strip from the perspective of food sovereignty.

In addition, and in parallel with the studies and the position paper, in September 2020, an online mujawara (convening) was organized on our Zoom platform regarding the movement towards adopting food sovereignty in the Arab world, which is important in the region as it stems from the urgent need in light of the current challenges facing  Arab countries, also internationally. A review of the current food production and consumption systems, and a reconsideration of the rich agricultural heritage in our countries that depend on local and natural resources, and is socially, culturally, and environmentally appropriate for our homelands.

We thank the speakers who shared their experiences and activities in the regional movement towards achieving food sovereignty in Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, and the Yarmouk camp in Syria and Palestine.
